Really enjoyed taking the keiki to the movies at the Kress theaters. The laid back atmosphere, reasonable prices, and rich history was a great way to spend an afternoon. Wish we knew they were closing so we could have taken a few more trips or pictures before hand. Would be cool to have a drive thru again down kalapana or show some good old flix like old yeller, where the red fern grows, E.T, ect, in Pahoa (akebono). That's just wishful thinking for Pele has other plans for Puna.

Man, I'm gonna miss the cheap seats, that's a great theater. Clearly, the operators (Regal) are making a lot more money on the mall theater they also own. Didja know...movie theaters make 80% of their profit from concessions? (Think giant popcorn, Jr. Mints)
On the other hand, WE'RE GETTING A PIER ONE? WOOOHOOOO!

“It’s my understanding that discount theaters are closing around the nation because they show everything in 35-millimeter film,” said Evan Carmichael, who co-pastors Sure Foundation with his wife, Shinobu. “Now, a lot of the studios release everything (digitally). … It would probably have been a couple of months, if we hadn’t stepped in now, that it would have just gone dark.”

I knew a manager of a theater, and the figure he gave me was 90-95%. The amount the studios keep depend on the release. 80% figure may be true for theaters with more screens. That is why a bucket of popcorn is fifty dollars, and they have snipers on catwalks that will shoot you if you try to bring in food from the outside. Without the concession sales, they would have to close their doors. Rent is high.
