Ahalanui, Champagne Pond, Waiopae Kapoho Tide Pool

Well, it's definately a gamble, but MRSA is fairly common (gyms) these days. I agree that if you are worried you shouldn't expose yourself intentionally. My kids have gotten scratched down there on the rocks underwater, and have not had a problem.

You people might want to read this article from the Hawaii DOH. You also need to realize that 30% of the population carries MRSA on the skin or in their noses.

Here is one statement from that report :
"Many people are also infected with the bacteria from their own skin or noses."

The report :

I used to get that (or something similar) every time I swam with an open cut in the warm waters off the coast of Thailand. As little as five minutes of direct sunlight cured it faster that all the tweaks of modern medicine.

Has anyone been swimming at Champagne Ponds recently?
Is it now safe, and how or where do I find out?

Yes, people are covered with many bacteria and Staphylococcus aureus is very common but MRSA is "methicillin resistant" Staph. The main difference is that most over the counter treatments won't work and if you don't deal with it quickly and properly you could wake up dead.

A few years ago I got MRSA from a scape with coral at Kapoho Vacationland while snorkeling. Spent a week in Hilo hospital and now wouldn't swim any heavily used fresh and/or volcanically heated runoff waters meet seawater, particularly with any open wounds.

Instead, I like Pahoa Pool where the water is chlorinated to kill off waterborne pathogens. An added bonus right now is if you look to the north you can watch the clouds of smoke from where the lava is burning everything in its pathway.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ahalanui Park to Reopen October 13

The Hawai‘i County Department of Parks and Recreation will reopen Ahalanui Park in lower Puna on Monday, October 13.

Damage caused by recent Tropical Storm Iselle created hazardous conditions in the park, prompting Hawai‘i County to close the park’s popular warm pond as a safety precaution.

General contractor William C. Loeffler Construction Inc. repaired the storm-damaged rock walls and concrete walkways forming the pond’s perimeter and removed debris deposited into the swimming area.

The Department of Parks and Recreation thanks William C. Loeffler Construction Inc. for completing the repair work weeks ahead of schedule, allowing park patrons to return to enjoying this unique recreational site.

Starting Monday, October 13, Ahalanui Park will be opened at 7 a.m. and operate according to normal hours.

For more information, please contact Jason Armstrong, Public Information Officer, at 961-8311 or jarmstrong@hawaiicounty.gov.
