Mayor Oliveira???
#1
Will Darryl Oliveira, like Harry Kim before him, turn his current high profile into name recognition for public office? He's not on the radio everyday like Harry, but is certainly getting a good deal of publicity.

Anyone running against him would have to amass a huge campaign chest to buy the same level of familiarity to the voting public.

I personally think he would be a great CEO for the County. His handling of recent Natural crisis and his previously bringing accountability to a beleaguered Fire Department are indications of integrity and leadership.

I'm sure there is some disagreement here.............

Doubtful, he came out of retirement to volunteer his services. I doubt he wants to do anything but relax and spend time with his family if/when this current happening ever sizzles out.

He and his family actually now live on Oahu, but he came out of retirement at Billy's request. I'm sure he never expected the job to be so all-encompassing when he said yes... Talk about the right person at the right time!

Can't imagine he would want the headache, especially since he came out of retirement for only a short time and then all hell broke loose.

Wait until I tell my friend of a non friend of "Ken" that this guy might be trying to edge "Ken" out of being the next Mayor in 2016!!

Unfortunately, I think he, and Bobbie Jean both are looking forward to their retirement in two years.

A few months ago, after Iselle, I asked BJ about it and she said NO, she wants to go back to private practice and relax!!

It is always the way it is - good people who do good work dont want to go into politics.

But I have to thank them both for their awesome job they are doing.

So one thing to be said for Billy is he picked some good people to help run the County.

Yes, not everyone is cut out to be the guy at the top of all the other chains of command who keeps it all moving. I think Mayor in these times must be an exhausting job, and I'm glad that Kenoi has a lot of energy. He had the energy to do the Ironman course this year.

I'm very grateful and in admiration of Oliveira, but I don't see why he would want to be Mayor at this time of his life, and he also doesn't come across as a mover and shaker or very political.

"...doesn't come across as a mover and shaker or very political..."

At the time, when Harry was gaining his notoriety, neither did he. I suspect his eventual political conversion and then 2 term "success" was what leads others to presume that a CD director with a sustained event has a helluva bully pulpit. However I think many will now reflect on that 8 years as a lost period. Harry's supporters seemed to be yearning for a grandfatherly trust figure who would not cheat them or take advantage of them. Unfortunately he had never met a tax dollar that he didn't think belonged to a public employee, and he hired and conceded pay negotiations till the chickens came home to roost. His 8 years was somewhat analogous to John Waihee. Ariyoshi spend 10 years of fiscal conservatism saving money that Waihee blew in a binge of hiring and wage increases, leaving Ben to mop up the mess when the recession of the 90's squeezed the state. Steve Yamashiro was a fiscally conservative Mayor who believed in progressive policies regarding rezoning and growth. This led to a slew of "shovel ready", fully entitled projects in the pipeline so that when the demand arrived with a rising economy the Counties tax revenues swelled from the increased basis. Harry enjoyed writing the checks through these salad days, Billy came in to a massive recession and had to figure out how to cash those checks.
We don't need another Mayor elected without a full vetting of just what their capabilities are across the whole spectrum of the position, not just their name recognition, a distinctive voice and a perception of character. It's a big job, very few are capable of matching it's demands.

Billy can do it in his sleep.....but lucky for us he doesn't sleep much !

"Mayor" Olivera?

Never happen.

JMO.

P.S. Bless him for doing his best at this time. Thankfully, he was Fire Chief. FWIW.

I hope he doesn't venture into the mess that is politics and can instead retire with a well deserved and great sense of accomplishment. This is what public service can and should be--competent, capable people working their butts off for the common good. Something there will be even less of in this country after tonight.
