Holy moly, the issue of fires is such a big one on the island, and now there's a wacko running along the road setting them!? This person needs to be found....and SOON!

There have been several smaller fires near Honokaa in the past month but I don't think they've been in the newspaper. One of the fires was in the eucalyptus plantation above Paauhau. It looks to have just been the grass and brush under the trees, the trees themselves didn't seem to have burned. If that truly catches on fire, I doubt we have enough fire fighters on the whole island to put it out. The whole coast would go up in flames. Especially with no fire breaks planted and the trees planted right up to the edges of the highway. The power would be out from flaming trees falling on the electrical lines and folks wouldn't be able to drive on the one and only road between Hilo and Waimea because of downed trees.
Hmm, do burned trees fall over? I would think they would. Maybe I'm confusing forest fires with wind storms?

No, not usually, but the burned trunks fall over about a year or two later. Of course I'm talking about Dade county slash pine.
