I sure do seem to see that sears truck out a lot ....they have a good source for parts as well.
Most appliances today are made by one or two manufacturers ...sears seems to have what I need in stock when something goes on the fritz

Thanks for the feedback. We have an appliance problem and apparently Bob has the contract for Home Depot extended warranty repairs.

I'm told he has a tendency to convince people that their particular repair is out of warranty - just watch out for that.

So to close the loop on this post, Bob fixed the problem. The parts were about $200, I'm guessing the home visit fee was about $80. Though we paid nothing due to the 4-year extended warranty (manufacturer warranty plus 4 year extended=5 years) we had bought for $99. Definitely worth the money for the extended warranty in this case.
Bob's advice was basically that all appliances are now made in China, they are crap, and regardless of the cost buy the longest extended warranty offered. If you can't afford the extended warranty.... buy something else. Just factor the extended warranty cost into the total cost of the appliance. Our appliances are all General Electric which is considered a step above LG (Life's Good... a rebranding of their old name Goldstar). Whirlpool and GE names are basically interchangeable. I don't know about Kenmore. We have an LG microwave and it is garbage. My dad's washer and dryer are probably 30 years old and they work almost as good as the day they were made. Our modern appliances will be considered to be at the end of their lifespans when the extended warranty runs out in 2017. ETA: to be

I might add that Michael's Repair does appliance work. And, yes, I am lamenting the older appliances. The new ones seem like junk. Printed circuit boards that burn out etc. Self locking lids on washers. I see a problem coming there. Lots of flashing lights and little songs. My daughter's fully electronic washer does all this. It suddenly quite working one day. Scheduled Michael to come and look at it. Then it just as suddenly started working again.

Eventually every home will have a sophisticated 3-d printer and when your washer breaks the printer will print 20 or 30 pieces that you assemble like legos and PRESTO you have a new washer. Then when something breaks you'll just print the piece with the defective part and reassemble. You'll be able to download the plans for free and the printer will use recycled materials to print the job. Then when the printer breaks we'll post on Punaweb 2.0 about how pissed we are that the printer's extended warranty has expired.
