That system looks way too expensive at $1400.00. Here's a link to the same output solar panels, charge controller, etc for $319 http://www.amazon.com/Renogy-Solar-Panel..._8?ie=UTF8&qid=1432576136&sr=8-8&keywords=renogy+100w

You can add a $200 inverter and about $200 worth of batteries from costco, plus $49 for the wheeled chest at Walmart and have the same system for half the price.

A few years ago I bought a 2500 watt / 5000 watt peak inverter on Amazon with free shipping for $106. It included extra heavy duty cables which are normally about $30-$40 extra. I thought it was a mistake or must be junk. I got the inverter and was heavy duty, quality construction. Although I didn't need two such inverters (at the time) after I tested it out I bought another one because the price couldn't be beat. Shortly after that the inverters were sold out and never came back into stock. So if you shop around you might be able to build your own system for even less than half.

ETA: fix price

Tropical Storm Andres, first named storm of 2015 Pacific Hurricane Season, forms near Mexico

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The first tropical storm of the Eastern Pacific's hurricane season has formed far from Hawaii off the coast of Mexico.

Tropical Storm Andres has sustained winds of 60 mph and is forecast to reach hurricane strength within the next 36 hours.

The current forecast does not have the storm reaching Hawaii or the U.S. mainland before dissipating.
Forecasters say that high surf appears to be the most likely indirect impact along the Baja peninsula this weekend. Some high surf may impact Southern California beaches next week.

Tropical Storm Andres hasn't moved much in any direction since yesterday, however looking at the 12:00 pm PDT, Sun 31 May 2015 frame you can see thaT low pressure has developed to the East of TSA which I believe will precipitate movement in an Easterly direction today.JMO

Hurricane Andres is a Cat 4 hurricane this morning, and is moving WNW...is expected to strengthen a little then travel north, to an eventual cooler water death, in the next day or two...hopefully... but is still below our lat...and in warm water...so...best to keep a very healthy respect for this storm...

In the interest of closing this dialog, I did go the the route of the interlock kit. I hired a fellow Punawebber to do it. I won't out them because I don't know if they want the publicity, but if the installer wants it, by all means reply and advertise your services. Highly recommended.

In my case the existing electrical panel would not accept an interlock kit (the main switch is by the meter) and the most effective way to power the whole house via generator was the interlock kit installed on a replacement panel with a second main switch. And the 30 amp generator cord electrical box permanently mounted on the side of the house and routed up through the attic to the panel so there is nothing to trip over or "temporary" about the installation.

I tried it out today during the *ahem* monthly generator maintenance and it powered the whole house cleanly and safely.

I'm really glad that I didn't go the suicide plug route or any of the other half-measures that are available.

Thanks to everybody who contributed to this thread for their advice and experiences.
