Aloha, Pam! (Waving plus hug) Trust all is well with you. [ ]
Mahalo for the live link, dakine.
Indeed, quite a show, Shockwave rider! Love it.

The breakout appears (from the web cam) to be heading almost due North, but if you look at the maps, that's right over top of two of the older lava tubes, which in due time themselves turned NE and then eventually E. No guarantees, but the lay of the land does tend to promote that Easterly direction.
However, should the flows head due North toward Eden Roc, I have a question for Opihikao: is it true that Pele can be appeased with Gin? If so, I may need to ship some to our tenants as I've discovered an excellent distillery on our other Island here (Island Spirits on Hornby Island just a short paddle from my Vancouver Island home)

Aloha, VI. It is my understanding that the "gin" appeasement came from long time owner of the Volcano House, Leo Lycurgus (his wife was my father's Godmother, and the man Alex Lancaster mentioned below, is our Uncle). Here is a brief on his (Leo Lycurgus) experience with "Tutu Pele". Other stories are easily found:

In my Tutu's opinion, and other Kupuna, like Aunty Iolani Luahine, and Aunty Emma DeFries, nothing will "appease" Pele, not even gin. It is HER will, and we just "pule" for protection and mercy. Being of her "line", we don't do the gin thing. We just pick her up if she's traveling as an old woman, or young beautiful maiden. (Keep an eye out for her white German Shepard type dog, too; if you see him, she is near...[ ]).
We do pack " hot cocoa and craka", drive to where you can see, and watch her beautiful power. Oh, the stories. (Apologies for the O/T, again.)
JMO.
P.S. Don't waste the good gin, please. Make a martini instead! Or, in this case, a Sloe Gin Fizz...[ ]

Aloha and mahalo for sharing the wisdom of your kupuna, Opihikao. We always pick up hitch hikers, whether old or young, men or women. This gin is world class, and straight up with a splash of water really does it justice. These days it's hard to drive to see Pele at work (other than to visit Halemaumau), but when nobody is looking, there is the trail I know that gives a good vantage to see her current toils at Pu'u'o'o. You'd need a big thermos and pack for the hot cocoa and craka, though =) Much easier right now to hire a helicopter, but ask them to politely fly high over the subdivisions, I know it's a problem for many here.

You're after my Granny's heart (not Tutu, the Lycurgus side)! She loved her gin, with a "splash". Told us to "walk past the running water in the sink real fast" with her high ball glass! (Sorry, O/T and digressing, lol. Plus, it's hot as hell. Ugh.)
As to the viewing opportunities, I think I'll wait until easy viewing is possible. [ ] Freaking hiking anywhere in this heat would be treacherous for us older folk.
Back to topic, do any of us think this new flow is worthy of notice, or can we just watch and enjoy? Make no mistake, we all get a bit nervous in our ohana, as preparation is key. Mahalo in advance.
Going back to listen to the oxygen sucking, mind boggling, legal wrangling of the TMT appeal hearing. [xx(]
JMO.
P.S. Remember, our ohana loves Victoria. Our house swapping offers come with "divine protection". [ ] (j/k)

Mahalo, dakine, you do ROCK. You have some really good information (as to lava and other topics) just like Bananahead, and a quite a few others here, that some of us depend on in these kinds of topics.
No matter everyone's differences on other subjects, this one, you have always had a handle on, like others here. Mahalo again, and e kala mai, yes, always worthy of notice. Sometimes we (our ohana) tend to take for granted this force we have lived with all our lives, and don't "prepare" nor "panic". However, with mo'opuna, I always want all of us to be maka'ala.
The links are so helpful (in our day, we had short wave radio, with kukui hale po (kerosene lantern).
Be safe all. Aloha ahiahi.

My thoughts exactly Dakine.
Except, that it won't stop, but definitely slow down!
Would be nice if Pele actually stopped for a few years...
I knew something was up yesterday, driving up from hawaiian beaches, I saw the plum of smoke up near the crater at about 7 am. when I got to 130, longs, I could really tell, it was not just some sort of normal cloud activity but must of been volcano related.
Would have been nice for the pressure to have released back down on the kalapana side again. One day, you know it will happen and it will start the flow off in another direction.

VI, send the gin to me and I will give it to the first old woman I see.
Granted, that will probably be my wife, but she frequently need appeasing as well.
