Wildlife officials on Wednesday confirmed that the swimmer who was bitten on his foot while swimming in a remote area of the Big Island was attacked by a shark.
The man, 54, was in the water Tuesday morning at the "clothing optional" Kehena Beach. He told emergency responders that he was wearing fins, and the shark ripped off one of the fins, injuring his ankle.
The swimmer waved for help, and other beachgoers assisted him back to shore. He was about 100 yards offshore at the time, in turbid water.
Officials from the DLNR Divisions of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) and Aquatic Resources (DAR) investigated and now say his injuries are consistent with a shark bite. Warning signs will remain in place at Kehena Beach until at least noon on Wednesday.
