Gnats

Last week, they seem to be quite abundant. Is there some sort of "gnat season"? I didn't notice them this bad last year at this time. I'm trying the vinegar/soap traps and it does get a few, but maybe if someone has experience with a better method, I'd love to know. I did a search here on Punaweb, but didn't find anything definite. Google search provided me with vinegar trap I'm trying now.

If they're fruit flies, you can get pheromone baits-probably from Ag Extension or Master Gardeners if not from a store like Garden Exchange.

if they are not fruit flies, and are the little black flies, ....keep your trash can and sink clean... spray a bug killer inside the trash can after you change bag, it will kill the maggots, and stop the next generation.. they can reproduce in a couple days if you leave untreated organic stuff in trash
they may also be coming in via a metal screen door that has holes a bit too big, thats why my mom gets them in HPP

I wonder whether different parts of the country use the word "gnat" for different bugs. We have those teeny black flies here (the ones that come thru the screens at night) that I have heard called gnats. I'll find a bunch of dead ones in the morning in our sinks. (On east coast, where I grew up, gnats were little round buggers with short stumpy wings that loved to fly right into your eye. I mean, they really really loved it! They were only out in the day.) I believe the little flies that come in at night thru the screens are not the same ones that we find in our trash can in the day, which look like mold/fungus flies to me. Ag Dept might be able to have some advice.

We call the black HARD shelled flying bugs that come out at night "gnats" not sure if that is what they are but they seem to have a hard shell and get all over you fly/crawl inside your clothes down your nexk. Irritating little buggers but they only come out when its dark.

What are those bugs called are they "gnats" or called something else here on the isle. Never seen them anywhere else except here in Hawaii.

Many people cal them "crunchy bugs". I have no idea what they are really named.

"Crunchy" is one of our classifications for the larger ants. " Racing ants " is another one ... And anyone I ever talked to knew exactly what kind I meant using either of these terms ...

Windex takes out a lot of bugs BTW .. So shoot them down and wipe clean at the same time .. " Sparkle tooth "
