Song of the Summer 100 Years Ago - Yaka Hula
#1
The biggest song in America 100 years ago was a little ditty called "Yaka Hula Hickey Doola:"

Down Hawaii way, where I chanced to stray
On an evening I heard a Hula maiden play
Yaaka hula hickey dula
Yaaka hula hickey du

Even I can't defend what white people did to Hawaiian music, it's a travesty. But take a listen for yourself at the link below. Unfortunately it wasn't the only hit song about Hawaii that summer, there were others such as "Oh How She Could Yacki Hacki Wicki Wacki Woo."

If you don't think you can bear to listen to the music, there's a black and white photo of Kaimu Black Sands Beach from the early 1900's worth seeing at the link:

There seem to be a lot of songs "based" on romantic or heroic ethnic groups. A few I can think of offhand (showing my age):
Cherokee nation...Cherokee tribe. So proud you lived...so proud you died
Gypsies, tramps and thieves
So Running Bear loved Little White Dove
