Try this site for more information on specific spots.
I would definately stay away from Hookena ------------- Today in History: Daisy, the Honolulu Zoo's African elephant tramples her keeper to death seemingly becoming tempermental after 17 years in Hawai'i, 1933. She is immediately killed by police officers and her body then towed out to sea and left behind for sharks.

I love camping in hawaii, no skunks, snakes, bears, or anything else really... You would be limited with a camp trailer on the island, a tent or canopy with cots is a good way to go.

i think hookena is a great spot for camping, however for the really good spots you need a 4 wheel drive vehicle

...and once you've got that 4X4, you might have to engage in a bit of water-boarding I'm afraid -- 'cuz loffelkopffl ain't revealing nuttin' else. Are you? ;-)

A very public but fun place is just North of Hilo at around mile 14 (give or take a little). It has a fresh water waterfall and river that then go into the ocean. Bathrooms, outdoor showers, fun for kids. Flat grassy area for tents with several rock BBQ's and picnic benches in place. Can't think of the name but it starts with a K...

Pam is talking about Kolekole. To camp there I think you would need a permit.
