the description sounds like LFA's or Electric Ants to me... are you sure they arent them?
mine always are on cat and dog food if left out for over a day, even on the empty bowls w/residue.. they are orangeish... and slow walkers for an ant.. like to walk in lines along edges, or up trees, very small, love to farm bugs on plants, often seen under rocks and other items on ground.... ...

In my experience LFA don't go for commercial protein ant baits. They will go after Advion Syngenta Cockroach bait though. I put some next to some Siesta once to see which they preferred and most of them preferred the Siesta.
