Cost of Living and CPI
#1
So how are the costs of the important items like food, fuel, medicine, electricity in Hawaii going along?

Here it seems the price of everything has escalated by half. Since ethanol became the go to fuel of the future, made of corn, all those products which need corn have gone up say for every dollar to one and a half dollars or more. Is this how it is there also?

August 07 can of corn 89 cents, December 07 can of corn 1.50.

August 07 94 cent vase (for a fund raising luncheon) November 07, same exact made in china cheap glass vase 1.49?

January 07 pound of chicken breast (for fundraising luncheon) 99 cents
January 08 " " " " " " 1.59.

So didn't someone in France say let them eat cake, and it was a total misunderstanding, Marie had not one clue that people had no table bread to eat!

Haven't notice the huge jump in most things, but milk went up about a dollar gallon this fall

I noticed how expensive chicken was, compared to the mainland. $9-10 for a $3 chicken, not frozen or cooked. Beef and ham was reasonable, but why was chicken so expensive?

Hey Morganlady...I've found a few ways around it...I go to the Love's Bread Store on Malolo and get 8-10 loaves at 2.19 a loaf and freeze it in our chest freezer...only makes sense. And for each few loaves you buy you get one or two for .25 each! It's a good deal.

We also make it a point to get our veggies at the makuu or farmers market...that saves us a lot in veggies. Watch the sales at Malama Market (believe it or not) has some great meat sales too. Just gotta watch for them. KTA is high on some things and not on others. I'm one of those "if it's on sale...that's what I'm getting" people.

Hope this helps. I shop Safeway too 'cause we have the card and it does add up a bit. Long's Drugs sends out their booklet with sales items...sometmes some really smoking deals there...just keep your eyes open..

food prices have jumped considerably in the past year, eggs are like gold, milk up, as are most canned goods, i'd say costs have jumped 20 to as much as 30% on some

Here's something relevant, which may help this discussion:

http://hawaii.gov/dbedt/info/economic/library/faq/faq03

it's about the Hawai'i CPI (consumer price index), and it explains how the numbers work, why they don't have a separate CPI for anywhere other than Honolulu, etc. The numbers only go up to 2005, though. :-(

Aloha! ;-)

O'Keefe's bakery has a discount rack. You can get day-old sliced wheat for $1.25 a loaf. I won't buy their bread anywhere but the bakery because it's so much cheaper there, especially foccacia.
Island Naturals in Hilo has a discount produce bin- I've found some great deals there.
