The structures there are built with the idea that they could be wiped out. That's why the observatories are looking at things that don't need any highly specialized equipment. The sun is close, the atmosphere is easy to sample and the microwave array is fairly small, etc. Most of the construction is quite low budget and either removable or can be abandoned. They built that big ditch in case a flow occurred, but no one knows if it would really do anything other than maybe buy them time.
