ROD detected on Kauai Ohia
#1
They've detected the less deadly form of Rapid Ohia Death (ROD) on Kauai. Not sure how it got to the forest reserve (birds?) but maybe this will ramp up efforts to combat it.

quote:
State officials said Friday that Ceratocystis huliohia, one of two pathogens that causes ROD, was detected this past week in at least five dead trees in the Moloa‘a Forest Reserve in northeast Kauai. It’s the first detection of an ROD pathogen outside of Hawaii Island

Was hearing one of the most serious issues regarding the ROD is worries of deforestation and diminished water shed. Maybe we can replant other native species to replenish? Maybe disease resistant varieties of ohia?

Also, even though it's a rubbish tree, the Albesia helps with that water shed issue.

Maybe we can start already, instead of more "studies" and "waiting to see"?

I agree. Start now then study later. Can't hurt to plant native trees.
