pbmaise - the Great Crack referred to in the Volcano Watch article is the one on the southwest rift zone. The 1823 lava flow covered the southwesternmost part of Hawaii Volcanoes, including the little corner makai of the crack that isn't included in the park. The Puna Trail referred to runs along the coast from Punaluu to Puna; you can take it to Halape from the petroglyphs on Chain of Craters Road. Note that Ellis mentions passing by there on his way from Pahala to Kilauea; highway 11 comes within about a mile and a half of the 1823 flow. The second photo, of lava trees, probably actually refers to the Kalapana Trail though, since there are no trees down there.
