Our new beach is magnificent but dangerous. The shorebreak surges suddenly and very powerfully up the steep rough beach. Experienced surfers attest to the difficulty entering, but mostly exiting the ocean. I would hope inexperienced ocean goers and any visitors talk to the lifeguards before entering the water. The beach changes often and exit and entry places do, too.

Any info from anyone on the quality of surf? The old Pohoiki had about 4 separate breaks, at least 2 would commonly break if the waves were only 2-3 feet.
This meant there was frequently something to surf and also that there were safe conditions for beginners or people of intermediate surfing ability. (The left point in front of the breakwater would generally break only on a 6-foot-plus day.)

Reminds me of South Point down by Broken Road. It can be completely tranquil, perfect for snorkelling, and with no warning the tide suddenly changes, and the water is rushing hard against the rocks or pulling you away from the exit, making getting out very difficult.

It is a lot different than it used to be. It is very difficult to get in and out. The waves are more challenging too. It's more of a beach break now, and the rides aren't very long. I was there during a high surf advisory, so that made it a bit more challenging. It could be a bit more inviting when the waves are less than head high.
