Dry Weather Hikes In Puna
#1
The NOAA forecast of a drier than usual winter weather pattern seems like it's holding, and some of the places I walk or hike are more accessible and easier now without water filled natural depressions, feral pig trenches, and deep big wheel tire ruts.

The Shipman Beach walk starting at Beach Road in HPP has mostly dried up from our recent lack of rain, and strong winds. On of these days I plan a side trip through the generally inhospitable murky pool of low lying water leading to the coast at Paki Bay. If we don't get a heavy rain anytime soon, it should become more mud than stagnant swamp.

What about other day hikes?
Does anyone have a favorite place they visit in dry weather that's easier to reach, or that may be inaccessible at any other time when we are in a normal wetter weather pattern?

Though it takes WAY longer, I prefer to hike to Shipman via the coastline, starting at Kaloli Point. Lots of great scenery, sea arches, etc.

I think the dryer than usual winter weather pattern is official over.

HVNP has opened a few more hiking trails:

* a 0.8-mile section Halema‘uma‘u Trail opened, which brings visitors from the rainforest summit of Kilauea to the floor of the caldera.

* the Ka‘u Desert Trail was opened... from Pepeiao Cabin/Ka‘aha Trail intersection and to Hilina Pali Overlook.
