Animal rescuers in Hawaii have saved a badly injured dog who was buried alive on a beach.

The pup was found by a member of Oahu-based organization Paws of Hawaii on Tuesday after someone armed with a machete, presumed to be the owner, had just buried her beneath the sand on the west side of the island, the group posted to Facebook last week.

The dog, named Leialoha for "beloved child," was swollen, sunburned, missing most of her fur and "bleeding from every inch of her body" when she was picked up, according to the organization. Her leg had also been cut with the machete.

Leialoha was rushed to a veterinary clinic, and caregivers were finally able to give her a bath two days later.

On Saturday, Leialoha's foster parents posted an update stating that she has "come so far." At first, she would only leave her kennel to go to the bathroom, but she has since ventured out to "see what was for dinner" and has found her safe space under a coffee table.

"She has a long way to go, but the worst is over," a Facebook post read.

The organization is asking the community for donations for Leialoha's recovery.

I hope they catch who did this.

That poor innocent creature, tortured... probably killed if not for the intervention of caring people. Absolutely sickening.

This is certainly shocking but it is atypical. I wouldn't set any policy based on this case.

The person who did this is obviously sick. A more subtle form of animal abuse that goes unnoticed is supporting fast food restaurants like McDonalds or Burger King that sell meat from tortured animals.

People have been practicing that type of behavior towards animals forever. I would say "in Hawaii" specifically, but I suspect it happens all over the world. But here, I could give a long list of animal cruelty events I have heard about, seen, or had perpetrated on my animals, in the islands in my lifetime. A very long list. And, no, there are no meaningful laws on the books to protect animals or prosecute the offenders.

Have you ever seen an animal die from drinking antifreeze? From ingesting meat soaked in Paraquat? Had a neighbor who shots all animals they see and most of them go off maimed to die elsewhere? It happens all the time here. Every day.

Two roosters with knives strapped on, in a fight to the death?

Let's hope the rescued dog lives, recovers, and finds the company of a kind and caring owner for the rest of its life.

Saw the dog on the news last night and they said it was recovering rapidly. Looked like it had about half of its fur back.
All kinds of animal abuse around here. Dogs chained up in the sun all day that bark constantly, dogs allowed to run loose getting hit by cars....puppy mills...

It's heart wrenching that there are people out there who do such cruel things to innocent animals. Laws need to be tough on people who commit such inhumane acts.
