What are customs like for a shipping container
#1
Hey all,

We are finally beginning to get geared up for our move over, although we still have a few months, it is only now starting to feel real!

Question: What are customs like when shipping furniture and such thing over in a 20ft. container. Does a customs agent meet the container at the port, pull everything out and thouroughly inspect every item? Just curious before we beigin to strategize how to pack the darn thing. Also what are the laws as to what is acceptable to bring and what is not? Anyone know this infor first hand? Any good links to get this info?

Thank a million.

Where you coming from?

America is a free country I thought... [Big Grin]

Your not transporting people/immigrants in these containers I hope [Big Grin]

Why would customs be involved if your from the U.S.?

Well we just figured with the islands free of poisonous snakes and rabies and the sort, there must be some procedure to check containers...? Yeah?
Cos you know as ppl pack theres the off chance stuff could hitch a ride...

You mean they don't check? (in any way or form?)[Big Grin] Wow

Let's think about this...

How do we protect our United States borders from snakes and wild dogs with rabies... sheesh we can't even protect our borders from people less yet animals. [Wink]

Your talking Agriculture inspections... not CUSTOMS! [Big Grin]

No first hand knowledge as the 2 containers we shipped were not opened enroute, but we have friends who had their container opened "fumigated" with something strong enough to warrant a lot or airing out and cleaning.

It is not a customs issue but a Department of Agriculture issue. Contact AG for answers.... Smile

Jim,
We received our container at our Hawaiian Beaches house with the same lock on it that I put on in NY.
I would think only if your container is flagged for some reason would there be any inspections.[^]
