Chicago - no longer "OUR Kind of Town!"

"American to cut Chicago-Honolulu service"

Aloha!

And the hits keep coming! Keep your chin up - block - jab - watch out for the uppercut![xx(]

Another airline takes a swing at the Hawaii tourist market - now mainlanders will have another plane to catch on the West Coast - another chance for there baggage to end up in Brazil - might help with importing "Tectococcus Ovatus" and ending our strawberry guava problem. [Wink]

Is it just me developing a "the sky is falling" paranoia? All these major upheavals feel like they are running altogether - happening as I write! Reminds me - time to check "Google News". [:p]

Time will tell - I'm listening?
Time will tell - I'm speaking?

Nope. You're right. It's the beginning of the end. Our entire economy was premised upon relatively cheap oil. We have passed peak production and we can kill all the moose in Alaska, and squeeze alol the shale in Canada and still not catch up to demand, ever.

Now, operating an airline will be unsustainable unless they dramatically increase prices.

As Bob pointed out, Mesa Airlines is probably next.

On the oil horizon the goal is an eventual $200.00. This figure came upon the media a few days after Hugo Chevez met with Amadinejad in Caracas, so obviously they had an oil and terrorist policy pow-wow. The thought seemed unreal at the time but now it seems possible since we're getting skewered by OPEC again,("Oh- we're only raising oil costs because of demand requirements- it's not our fault!). Basically these countries want more cash to wage 'holy war' against the 'jews' & 'gentiles' using useful idiots like the street-thug Chevez as springboards into the Western Hemisphere.
Recently President Bush traveled to Saudi Arabia to ask King Abdul'lah to increase production but was given a resounding negetive by the Saudi King (as if to say ... "Why should we give you guys a break ... where does it say in the Koran we should do that?") To which Mr. Bush replied, "Ok then, thank-you very much - just thought I'd ask and don't worry, no matter how high the price of oil goes sir, we'll continue to modernize your military forces and use the American Military to protect you from all your ****e enemies -especially Iran, sir."

In short we're screwed and there's no way to get around it as the previous poster has indicated. The American system was designed to run on cheap oil supplies and suddenly oil prices arn't cheap ... and as the collective conciousness of America actually awakens to this reality we're going to go through some real economic soul-searching as a nation. First off must come inflation, since the link between the price of oil and the consumer driven society is intimate in all arenas. As this trend developes opportuniies in the job market, in education, travel, housing et al, are going to dry up if we're unable to regain low oil prices. A different world. A world with less opportunity.

JayJay,

Now can you project that thinking into Hawaiian terms?

And leave the world view alone....

Thus many of my posts on Punaweb.

I know that I don't have much to worry about in the future. What opportunities will the kids of Puna have in the future?

Relating this to the OP:

I actually think that the new arrivals from China that were announced today will far offset the amount of arrivals from Chicago.

They are talking about 6 flights a day with some 200+ Chinese people on it arriving in the islands soon.

Ni Hau Mas!

With UH Hilo recently opening the China Center... I can see the Big Island getting a big influx of China residents within the next few years.

Now if you think the big island is turning into California (or in this case chicago [Wink]) Just imagine what the Big Island could eventually look like within 200 years of China's Immigration here now that it will be legal for China residents to Fly to Hawaii w/out the Previous hassle. Had a co-worker that visited China less then 3 months ago... she said the air-pollution was so bad that it made VOG seem silly!

The squeeze has been going on the Big Island for quite some time.... I'm glad now that people are starting to see the ramifications of so many people moving here.
