And I’m from the rio grande valley of Texas, originally, so that’s saying something.

We have tried lots of other places and some were nearly inedible.  Yeah, Lucy’s in Hilo is semiOk, but Panchos is better.

I cook Mexican style food at home, also.  But getting Mexican type ingredients to cook with is a challenge.  Various cheeses, dried Chile’s, Spices, etc.

Anybody know where (Hilo, some store?) locally has a good selection of Mexican stuff to cook with?  I’ve been ordering from the internet but that’s expensive.

Heard it rumored that the Mexican Grocery moved to Shipman... haven’t been down there in ages. Google “Big Island Mexican Foods” and “Paradise Mexican Store”. All the cojita and anchos you’ll need.

We have similar palettes in Mexican food... and you’re right Panchos is best on our side but if you’re ever on Kona side and haven’t tried yet, check out El Mercadito Rincon Mexicano.

If we're talking about the same place the Shipman place was different than the little grocery in Hilo. It's mostly tortilla manufacturing. When I first moved here somebody told me that it had a "hidden" Mexican restaurant and it was the best Mexican food on the island. So I tried it out. It had already changed hands by then and was mostly local kine food. Thinking I was in the right place I ordered the only Mexican thing they had which was a burrito. It had teriyaki beef in it.

Quick edit: The grocery store in Hilo was called Mundo Maya.

Less quick-edit: They did have to close their store but they do have leftover stock you can buy if you want to help them out: https://www.facebook.com/MayanWorldFarm/
