Thanks Obie, thanks birdmove.
We had a one car accident several months ago on Beach Road near the Ala Heiau intersection.  The car crashed into a telephone pole in broad daylight.  The air bags deployed, forcefully enough that the driver and her passenger had blood on their faces.  They left, but their car remained in the shallow ditch for a few weeks until the County towed it away.  I don't know whether the cause was excessive speed like at Maku'u & 2nd, or distraction.  There was a chunk out of the telephone pole and a tree next to it.

It's flat in that area, the last big hill is on 5th.

Tourist had one stolen a couple of weeks ago in Hilo.

Yeah, I know it’s flat, but hill jumpers may not slow down the flat areas.
There is a sign near 2nd on the Hilo side that says slow down. I guess they didn’t see it.

Speeding and no seat belt were cause of accident. Driver was thrown from vehicle. Unknown if alcohol or drugs were involved at this time.
