If you cut a branch off a large Hala tree can it be replanted? Grown into a new tree? Maybe with root tone ?
I posted this in Farming and Gardening. got lots of views but no replies , so I'm posting here. Hope someone knows. I have some big trees that I want to prune and wondering if the branches will root in after cutting.

I think you are supposed to also dig up the roots that are attached to that branch.

They should decompose into good mulch. Pretty sure they won't re root from cut sections like invasive species do.

From the Hawaiian Native Plant Propagation Database at..

Propagation by Cuttings
"Pandanus tectorius can be grown from large cuttings. In Micronesia, selected forms of Pandanus tectorius are propagated by stem cuttings. Plants with aerial or prop roots are selected and about 2/3 of the leaves are trimmed off to reduce water loss. Moriarty suggests using a mature branch with leaves and some small aerial roots and rooting it in a sand bed. Plants grown from cuttings fruit in 4 to 6 years."
Note that at the link above they also cover propagation from seed.

Thanks for the info. I pulled up some keikis along red road about 10 years ago and now they're big trees. Looks like a cut branch off a tree won't root if it doesn't have aerial roots or any other roots on it? I have pulled some keikis off the ones I grew and they are growing now. The place I pulled up the keikis on Red road is now under 80 feet of lava.
One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.

Do you have both male and female plants ? The males have flowers and the females have the pineapple looking fruit. The seeds are in this fruit.
I have one Hala and mine is a male. The flowers are used to make lei's for hula.

That's my understanding. Propagating by suckers will work, with some care. A cut branch will not root.

IDK. No fruit, no flowers. Trees are about 12' tall.
