Can anyone recommend a Kennel for dogs or cats? We have been to the Barking kennels and thought it was a good kennel for our pets if we had to make an emergency trip to the mainland.
If we can't find one perhaps our AG land could be used for future kennel? Would that qualify as ag usage? Got this idea from Cathy and owe her a response also.
Just a little more creative avoidance!! LOL

If you go out of town and don't let me come over and feed your kittys and love on them several times a day, my feelings will be hurt. You don't need no stinking kennel, you will have one of the biggest animal lovers in the county right across the street!

Dear PJ, Yes I know and you would be my first line of suppport of course, you are the most when it comes to the cuddly creatures we keep in our families.!! I heard somewhere that the BarKing Kennels might be closed and others might have been counting on this service for their pets in an emergency.
Don't you think it would be good use of AG land? Beats worm farming no!!! LOL

Aloha Mella!
We are planning a vacation in June sometime and our two border collies no longer have their previous kennel to stay at. They really loved "Patty's Pet Sitting" which used to be in Ahualoa. She didn't really have "kennels", what she had was a big pasture (several of them, actually, since there were horses in one of them and she would also "pet-sit" horses.) The dog pasture was fenced with hog wire (the kind with big squares, not barb wire or electric fencing) and there was an open two sided shed in the pasture. There were about five or six chain link "kennels" that were six by ten or so in there and each of those had a plastic dog crate in it. That's where the dogs slept at night, but during the day they all played in the pasture full of a variety of dog toys.
Since the dogs had the pasture to play in, they weren't confined in a kennel where they would bark to get out. It was probably easier for Patty to keep the kennels clean, too, since the dogs did most of thier business in the pasture grass. It seemed like a good arrangement for Patty, the dogs AND the neighbors.
A hui hou,
Cathy

Hey Mella! Funny you should mention that because I had a crazy idea about looking into breeding mini-long haird Dachshounds as I loved my two so much as a child. I then realized that my adoption process would be more stringent than people adopting children (I would HAVE to know they were going to a GREAT home!!) and realized not many of my dogs would be allowed to go. Our home will definately be animal friendly so who knows, maybe some level of animal sitting could be in the future. We are going to have a hogwire fence so it is in the realm of possibilities. With so much land, I do want to give back and contribute some how. I really am not the crazed coqui murderess some may think, though one of the little buggahs woke me up THREE times last night. Oh, and I was sleeping sooo good! My neighbors and I had a pretty good thing going and helped each other out and seldom did mine have to go to doggie jail, and we traveled A LOT! Hotzcatz have you talked to any of your neighbors about pet sitting? I once had a neighbor back on South Padre who I liked but I loved their cat and was thrilled to get to take care of him, he was such a cool cat (literally). I have not heard about Barking Kennels closing up shop and as a matter of fact there was an add in the paper not long ago looking for help. I may just have to give them a ring and see whuz-up. Hope we are all surrounded by people who value our furry family members as much as we do. Have a great week! pj

Mella & Pam J, After reading the above posts, I got an idea for your ag enterprise...coqui farming, and all of the 'harvesting' of the buggers is then a business expense. (including the pay to the super soaker brigades). No market for your product? Tax loss! (Ok, can you tell we are starting to work on this years taxes?)
Mella, We had a friend who had a kennel years ago, and insurance liability for the operation then was becoming expensive....I don't know if anything has changed. But you definately do not want to start an business like this, on your property, without the proper liability coverage (pets do sometimes die, get injured or run off, while under the care of a kennel... and the owner of the kennel may have responsibility for the expenses & such. Just a downer reminder.)

HAHAHA Cary are you a tax accountant or what? Do you manage off shore tax havens!!! LOL
Found this Bar-King Kennel site I'm so happy they are still going strong, you might check them out Cathy! I was impressed with them. the site and the staff! The animals each get a room that has a tile floor and screening on two walls one side of which overlooks a courtyard, play area. These inclosures are I'm guessing 5x6X8 feet and if you have 3 critter cats like we do they can be housed together like a family unit, cat hotel!!! There are shelving for climbing and cubbies for sleeping and of course the BOX! The staff are knowledgeablecaring and also willing to help out the uninitiated in the quarentine process!
Yes PJ, down girl~~!! You are first in line to love on Mauser!! When Gene read Mauser your note about lovin on him he started purring, He is a Catus, Meowus, Extrodinaious and lookin forward to YOUR pampering his spotted body! Aloha, Mella

Mella,
We got our cesspool and gate posts in today! The "tile floors" at BK are $3.00 a day extra. The regular kennels are concrete and hurricane fencing w/ other dogs on either side, at least that is how it was for our dogs, cats may be a different story. Also you have to pay for them to let your dogs out to do their business. Otherwise I guess they just make them stay in the doggie jail and do their thing on the cement. Mine would blow-up as they know better than to go inside and in their minds the kennel would be inside. Just thought I would add what finite wisdom I had on the situation! Aloha pj
