I just got my new fish installed in a tank I scored on Craig's list but the whole experience of buying fish at Stacey's left a lot to be desired. The service is terrible, choices are limited, and there sure are a lot of dead fish floating or being eaten in their tanks. Is there any other option on this side of the Island?

I've had fish on and off ever since my brother gave me a set up tank and fish for my fourteenth birthday. He still does the fish thing in Florida and could fed ex me fish (he's a legal wholesaler and licensed international dealer) but it seems absurd to order fish from Florida when I live in Hawaii. On the other hand, he hand carried two iguanas to my daughter in Oregon one time so he might just bring them himself. I don't want to do a salt water tank and while I am enjoying my guppies I'd eventually like to get bigger more diverse tank going, but Stacey's just doesn't seem to have the fish to make it worth my while to set one up.

I have a smallish tank with a pretty efficient little pump for the filter and a florescent light, so it isn't pulling much juice. I've had much bigger tanks in the past and they didn't make a jump in my electric. I figure they can't be worse than a TV and I'd rather watch fish. They are endlessly entertaining and probably good for my blood pressure.

I'll take you up on the Koi and Goldfish once we get into a place where I can set up a pond. We just made an offer which looks like it will make it to closing so I'll be ready by New Years if the offer still holds.

Go up Wainuenue Avenue to the light on Komohana. Turn onto Komohana (there is only one way to turn) and follow the road to the four way stop sign. Keep going straight through the four way stop and then turn right on the first right after the four way stop. I think the street name is Uilani, but I could be wrong. Anyway, the first right after the four way stop. About half way down the block on the left side will be a mailbox with a silhouette of a chick (young chicken) on top of the mailbox. There will be pink flamingos in their flowerbed and water lily ponds between that house and the next. Turn down the driveway and behind the garage addition you will find the entrance to the Aqua and Aviary Hobbiest petshop. George is a really nice Japanese gentleman who has been keeping fish there for ages and he usually has really nice fish although he was having difficulty when Aloha Air Cargo went down since they brought in most of his stock.
There is also Richard The Guppy Guy but his house is harder to describe how to find it.

If you can make it to Kona; Stocklys Aquarium shop {on the same street as the International Marketpace} is the best shop I've seen on the island. They will pack your {farm raised} animals nicely in an insulated container and guarentee them for a trip to windward.

I agree with Greg's post. Stockly's is the best on the island for tropical fish. Nothing else comes close. And I haven't lost a fish yet bringing them back from Kona.

Thanks for the recommendations, and especially the directions. I knew there was a fish store in Kona but I just didn't know if it was worth the drive. I was pleased to get up this morning and nobody went belly up in the night. I always figure if I don't lose anybody in the first 48 hours then I'm good until I get tempted to add "just one more" fish and bring in some disease that wipes out my whole tank!
