What town is it that you just got into and have you ever surfed before?

Boogie boarding is a good starting point. Easier to handle gear so you can learn how waves work before having to go out and watch the waves while dealing with a large object such as a surf board.

I recommend caution. Your best bet is probably to follow Hotzcatz suggestion of getting a Boogie board. Then go to Richardson's beach park in Hilo (http://divehilo.com/announcements.html for directions - bottom of page). Richardson's has an easy/safe entry and a pretty good break when there is the right kind of swell. Good place for learners I would think.

Second option would be to travel over to Kona and take lessons. Try http://www.oceanecotours.com/ They use foam long boards and are a great group of people. Lots of fun with them.

Good luck and stay safe.

There is someone who gives lessons in Hilo. I had a couple guests who took lessons while visiting. One was taken to Honoli'i, I think, one maybe to Richardson's.

I don't know who gives the lessons, sorry, try the phone book or a web search.
Are you looking for free instruction?

btw, if you don't know what surf etiquette is, learn about it, or if you try this on your own you will have unpleasant interactions, to say the least. Locals are territorial about line-ups and you have to earn your place.
