Puna homes - light and venilation question
#11
Olin,
Another thing to consider would be the chimney effect mentioned back in the 1970s in some of the eco houses. It involved a 2 or more story column in the house with vents in the top and vents down low on the bottom floor. Warm air would be passively drawn up and out the top vents without using fans.

Here is a State web site that has a lot of info about ventilation, windows and energy considerations:

Lots of reading here!

I designed my own home here in Puna after reading a bit about ventilcation. We have a great room with 18 foot ceilings and jalousie windows at the top. The central part of the house and all the wings with bedrooms, etc... have windows that open low. This causes the draw talked about in an earlier post with ot air rising and moving out. However, we did add slow moving fans up high to keep the air moving . There is also a 3 sided wrap around lanai with from 4 feet (sides) to 8 feet (front) of roof overhang. so far, so good....

I hope we got it right! Time will tell.

You are welcome to email me and come see how we worked it outl.
