Building permits for metal building
#1
Aloha,
I may be moving to my property in Fern Acres in the near future, if I decide to take a job offering. It would entail a substantial paycut, change in career persay, and ending 17 years on Maui. I will have to decide by next Monday.
I have a few questions...if anyone would chime in it would be much appreciated.
First, I want to erect a metal building as a shop/temporary residence, (while I build my home) and was wondering what the restrictions were regarding the seismicity ratings, and wind ratings of metal buildings. The county website is not much help and rather than googling all night I thought I would try here first.
Secondly, are the building permits still taking up to 6 months to a year to obtain? I would like to get over as soon as possible and start the process if I accept the position.
Mahalos in advance,
Mike

Mike here is a site for the Fern Acres Community if you haven't already found it. They might have more knowledge to offer up also!

That being said, we have stayed in The Fern Acres Guest House on numerous occasions (113254 Plumeria, at pole 54) and across the street is just such a metal building now used for repair/shop type home stuff I believe. It started out as a living quarters I've been told, before the home was built. Fern Acres is zone 3. Building permits it is my understanding are coming in under 4 weeks currently. Hope this helps some. Aloha, Mella

Well sorta 4 weeks - add in time @ planning, health (a week - 2 weeks), engineering also.

On a metal bldg, the company that is selling should provide the specs - there are a couple of good draftspeople to take those and draw up prints with the foundation & site plans. And on Fridays from 10-2, Bob Smelker, A/E - is at Stacy's Drafting for advice and stamping plans. He charges upwards of $350 for stamp to private individuals. Email me and I can give you more info if you want.

Right on, thanks for the feedback. Decision will be made at tomorrow at 0600 or thereabouts. Good news on the building permits from this site and Fernacres.org (have been a member for a year or so) But I think my problem may lie in the land clearing. I understand that it is hard to find anyone, and if you do, they are booked solid for a year???. I am planning to try and do this by Sept 1, if all falls into place. If not, I have a fully equipped 1975 VW Camper (VW freak with 4 VW's) I can live in if the property is cleared. And BTW, I do not believe in the "slash and burn" clearing mentality...want to work with the topography and native vegetation for my home.
Any insight on the clearing?
Mahalos from Maui,
Mike

Thanks again everyone! My decision is made and I will know by next Tues or Wed if my negotiations for the job are accepted. If so, I will report on July 7 for duty. May be a stretch to get the land cleared by then...

Job Accepted! Soon to be Punatic....which reminds me of Maui when I first moved here from Oahu some 17 years ago.
Anyway, I am now looking to find a steel building outfit locally...anyone use a local company to erect a building?

Try the Hilo classifieds: http://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/classifieds/?loc=detail&main=Miscellaneous#Building_Supplies

Always ads fro metal buildings. I suspect they could point you in possible direction.
