Shopping around a bill of materials/materials list

Aloha punatics,

I'm looking for information from anyone that has build in the past if you have saved a good percentage from shopping around your building materials list to the various lumber yards/home depot locations to come up with better prices on a complete build.

Can you advise what you have discovered on saving costs in purchasing materials from various sources or one complete source or even direct from the mainland?

Some places such as HPM will match prices you have from other locations. Having it delivered is also a good thing, some of them, such as Argus will deliver for free if you buy enough and it doesn't take too much to be "enough".

See if you can get a "package deal" price by contracting to buy all your stuff from one place but have it brought out in smaller amounts as you need it. That will save possible theft problems.

I agree with you HC! I have even seen Argus through something on his truck himself and run it out on a Sunday (when they are usually closed!)

I'll cast another vote for having Argus bid out any project. I've found their prices competitive. Maybe not on every single item. But overall competitive. And his employees have always been extremely helpful and willing to go the extra mile. They actually seem in a good mood there! Not always the case at HomeDepot.

So even if I can save a few dollars with another supplier, I try to give business to them. When something goes wrong, and when building something will always go wrong, I prefer to have someone like Argus who will make it right.
