The HTH has been writing the last few days about the 1983 earthquake.
How bad was it? Any memories, lessons learned?
Was it a precursor to the 1983 lava flow?

You might want to read the volcano watch from November 21, 1997, which covered this earthquake. You can read it at:
http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/volcanowatch/1997/97_11_21.html
The damage was greatest in the Volcano area. Several homes, especially in the Volcano Farm Lots, were knocked off their foundations. And, most of those houses had fire places with traditional brick chimneys that collapsed. Official estimates place the overall damage at greater than 6 million dollars. It should be noted that the Ka`oiki Fault system, which is located between the summits of Kilauea and Mauna Loa is considered the most dangerous fault system in Hawaii. And, is considered over due for another release of energy.

Since we have lived in Northern CA we keep a link to the USGS CAL Earthquakes site on our desktop. Now in Hawaii we will watch the following link:

It is important to make reports when you do feel an earthquake, that is how they get information about damages and where it is felt. I always want to know the strength and location of it too.

well it was scarey... i had never seen glass "liquidfy" had heard about it, but to see the sliding glass doors bubble out was soo wierd. there was nothing to do but watch, no way to move just ride it out. our post and pier did so well after all was said and done, we just had to replace some of the earthquake bracing. my dad was an engineer and did a great job on the house, and this was way before sheer walls etc. etc...
