Does anyone know a good place to get bouganveilla's here in Hilo...worse case in Kona. I'm looking for a good color variety that they have in stock. Of course price is important too.

Plant inventory is constantly varying.
I always check Garden Exchange, and then Paradise Plants. Walmart and Home Depot after that. I prefer not to buy from Home Depot/Walmart and support the smaller nurseries, so I'll check them first. For me, Rozette's is far, but they are highly recommended, just not in Hilo. Garden Exchange will have some at a good price, but color range may not be what you want. I tend to cruise nurseries and get stuff when it's in, just because the "I need this and am going to get it today" approach doesn't work so well here. It all depends on what the growers are bringing in that week and how fast it sells.

Bouganveillas are easy to start from cuttings... & less likely to bring critters into your yard.
We have a bright pink one you can trim

I've got some purple and white you can have trimmings from, too! Just cut off a chunk and push the end into the dirt. Water it occasionally for the first several months. Most times they will take and grow. There are many plants that will grow from cuttings around here, just ask your neighbors for some trimmings and you will have some to give away yourself pretty soon.

Oh boy, I've been looking 4 purple & white w/ intentions to grow from cuttings! It's tricky to get the colors wanted. Will you send me directions & contact 2 schedule my visit?

It's really interesting that it grows readily from cuttings here. Bougainvillea is notorious for its fussiness when being transplanted on the mainland. If its roots get disturbed too much (and they don't knit well in a pot so the root ball is minimal), it tends to die of transplant shock. Sunset Western even recommends cutting the pot away from the plant for extra gentle handling.
But here you just cut a piece and make a new plant. Amazing and wonderful.

Kathy, we had one that was right up against our front fence. We decided to take it out after one too many branches escaping into the sidewalk on the other side...
After much tugging, digging, root & back snapping work we go the stump out, & it really was just a stump... decided to stick it into the ground on in the garden, just to see if it would grow. 1 year later & it is totally happy & almost as big as it was! |
