I am not sure about painting the crate - afraid some bureaucrat will find it "not up to the code".
Yes,Jenny is great - I talked to her on the phone.
My dog loves the crate -that's his house inside the house.
But he has separation anxiety which is partially cured by our love and the doggie door, but still...

Grab a Sky-Cap baggage handler as soon as you pull up to unload at LAX. Figure to tip 20-40 bucks. They will escort you through the maze.

Good advice. Nothing like having The Man on your side when navigating a mine field.
Worth the tip.
When you pull up to the curb do so right in front of the Sky-Cap stand.
Assume the best and ask questions.

StillHope,
I was at LAX just a few weeks ago. I may have chosen the wrong day to fly, but as Devany mentioned try and check in early. This wasn't with United but American, but the queue to get through security was huge and went well outside the terminal. You need to plan on this even if it doesn't actually happen on your trip. If you're going to travel with pets then I would really play safe and arrive three hours before boarding at the minimum. I did that and it was still a struggle to get to the gate in time although it all worked out in the end.

That is exactly what we did and it was money well spent. They did not even weigh our (probably overweight) bags. Also there is a guy that takes your animal down to the cargo area tip him too.

This is a little off topic...but speaking of UAL, I had an email this morning announcing they were having a sale Dec-Jan to the mainland from Hawaii for $257. I did not investigate the specifics...but this might make some folks very happy!

Excellent advice re:the skycap. Tip them well, they will make life much easier for you. When we got to LAX with the pup, we were directed to a separate check in line that handles pets, so don't panic if the normal check-in line is huge (as it usually is at LAX). And just to reiterate, the LAX desk folks were great - knew their stuff re: hawaii shipping and made it easy for us. One other tip - I'd call the United reservation telephone line at least weekly before you fly to confirm that they are expecting your dog to fly with you. The flight you're taking is popular with folks bringing animals over to the Island, so you don't want any last minute surprises. And when talking with their reps, be sure to address them by their name and keep track of names of all those you talk to. Until my recent retirement, I was a very frequent business flyer on United, so I've had lots of interactions with them. I've had bad luck with their out-sourced staff, but knowing exactly who I talked to was always helpful when I had to resolve the issues.

Rich is right... there are a limited amount of animals allowed in cargo. I assume you have a reservation for yours, we were able to get one for ours. Loretta that is a great price, what airport is it from?

I would assume that the deal is from HNL....as usual. Those of us living here always have to figure in at least $100 more per person to get from Hilo to HNL.
