Wendy,
My neighbor in Orchidland called me yesterday to ask if I had heard about the Big news on our street? A D-9 was clearing a lot and fell into a huge lava tube, The operator wasn't hurt but now the fun part trying to get it out of there.

Wow Lee,

That's the kind of thing I DON'T want to happen when we start to build. Worried about building a home and months or years later it falls into a lava tube that's underneath. Just looking to find a way to determine if there are lava tubes underneath, before it's too late.

Aloha Wendy, lava tubes often have cracks leading to the surface. If there is a cool breeze blowing up out of a crack in the earth, it's probably a tube. If it's near the surface, banging the ground with a sledge or a rock will produce an echo or ringing noise. Some folks I met in HPP once told me that in stormy weather they can hear the waves crashing in a tube under their lot.

Lee- What are you waiting for? Get over there and get a picture of the tractor in the hole and post it!

Thanks Pam and Leilani Guy for the great tips! If I don't find an easier way, my husband may just be out on our lot pounding away with a sledge hammer!

I just know with our luck that if we pick a location for our house and, if there is a lava tube anywhere on that lot, it will end up being right under the house.

Since I originally posted this, I did a little research on the web and found that there are ground penetrating radar surveys (GPRs). Has anyone heard of this or used one? If so, is it affordable?

I haven't been able to find anyone who performs this on Hawaii yet, but I'm still looking. If anyone knows someone, please let me know.

Or am I just going off the deep end and it's nothing to worry about. Is it something your contractor will know based upon their experience?

Ya'll are the best with all of your help and guidance.
