So at least we can hope it works. I've read that Europeans are under a lot of pressure to come up with alternatives to oil due to the imposition of carbon emissions trading scheme.

How about cold fusion? Physics isn't my strong suit but my guess is the scientists cannot explain why it might happen even with all the modern computing power. Sounds like the researchers hitting the wall of the law of thermodynamics that says energy cannot be created???

As I understand it, the scientific consensus on cold fusion is that it does not exist.
Every few years someone claims to have made it work (as has happened again this year) but repeatability is the key.
I wouldn't hold my breath.
