Our water pump that we use with our catchment to supply our house with water overheated and froze up. It was suppose to be one of the best water pumps made (Grundfos...sold to us in Hilo by Waterworks) and also very quiet. It lasted 3 years.
Anyway..my question is...Is it worth getting the pump repaired or replaced? And if the answer is repaired...any suggestions as to who could do it?

We are not on island yet, but our house designer had the following to say when I asked him about a pump. It sounds as if you already had this brand. Is it not still under warranty? "you may want to consider a submersible one. A pump under the house can be very noisy. They also get hot, and have shorter life spans. I have been in my house for 10 years. The first noisy, cheap pump (ran out of money) lasted about 6 months, rusted solid) the second and third ones, about a year and 18 months. Then I finally got a Grunfos stainless steel bullet in the tank. It has a 20 years guarantee, and is TOTALLY quiet. I resisted at first because it was around $900, but I spent much, much more than that on the three cheaper ones."

Buy a Goulds, they have a 5 year warranty vs. the Grundfos 1 year. Also if you use a submersible pump in a tank, make sure you use a shroud to prevent over-heating. Submersible pumps are a lot tougher than jet pumps, and will last much longer. They don't have 20 year guarantees, but they are known to last that long. Today's pumps should last even longer. However, you will also need a large pressure tank (80+ gallons). The reason for that it to lengthen the pump's run time. Doing this will extend the life of your pump and give you constant pressure in your house. I come across used pumps from time to time also, if that is something your interested in.

Well I took the water pump into the place I purchased it (WaterWorks). Even though the warranty expired...they repaired it in less than an hour for $70.00. Seems the only bad thing about Grundfos water pumps are that the capacitors wear out frequently. But they told me that the new one they installed is improved and should last a long time.

That is service. Many places would have told you to buy a new one.
Our well pump is now 9 years old and pumps our water 280 feet up! I am glad it has not failed us. (Also glad to be moving before we would have to pay for a new one) We have a 80 gallon pressure tank and the well tests out at 10+ gallons per minute flow. No, we are not on the island, just yet.

It is really worth considering whether what seems to be excessive pump wear may have something to do with bad grounds or other electrical issues. Of course it will just look like rust, but it's very likely to be the case and it's worth poking around with multitester to see if any stray current is floating around. It's not uncommon at all.
