Sean,
When and if someday we get more police make sure you have your ID with you at all times. Also be ready to tell the police where you live, where you are going and where you have been. Also be ready for them to call in this information while you are being detained for being a citizen in public. Remember they are just doing there job.
I know for a fact there are alot of us here in puna that like the fact we have a small police force. I have found the police have been responsive for me and my neighbors many times and i have respect for many of them, i have found them much more curtious than their counterparts on the mainland. That said it doesn't i want more of them.
Oh and please try to find it in your heart to forgive me for spelling "peers" incorrectly. I'm not trolling just writing from experience.

Come on guys, this is too important an issue to get snide about. Sean, I don't know what your military experience was, but the story in the papers yesterday (stories in both Tribune Herald and West Hawaii Today were written by the same person) has an anomally. The stories said that officers were struggling with the man. Who gave the green light to shoot with officers in contact with thew man? i believe this was suicide by cop, but this detail bothers me. It seems unlikely that the snipers would have been allowed to shoot if other officers were in danger of being shot by their rifles.
