Local Snorkeling - What Did You See?
#1
Alright, I was a good girl and did my searching...no luck. We were at the tide pools and there are groups of fishes I thought were Moorish Idols but are not...they do have a penant and are mostly yellow and white strips...same general shape as the Idol but no snout...are they butterflies? Angelfishes? I KNOW someone knows which one I mean...couldn't find it online...

Carrie, they sound like pennant butterflyfish, most pictures make them look more black & white, but it is common to see them more yellow (if you have Hoover's "Hawaii's Fishes, pg. 36). This site is good, but I had to use the Scientific name, couldn't use Pennant Butterflyfish, they listed it as False Moorish Idol... buummer! but most references have it as Pennant Butteryflyfish. Good eye for catching the snout difference, most don't even notice the difference.

You're right, Carey - the fish book even shows them as mostly black and white...but I was sure they were pennants of some sort...they are so pretty...saw a small group of about 10 or 12...very pretty all together...I'd love to see an Idol...they are so cool. Okay, I admit it - my love affair with the Moorish Idol really began with Finding Nemo...an easy win for an animator since they are so cartoon like already.

Carrie, have you been snorkeling at Richardson's beach yet? There are quite of few moorish idols that are out & about there, esp. up along the north reef cut through.

No haven't been YET...but you just perked my interest LOL!! I feel like Jacques Cousteau (okay, so you all know I have a vivid imagination by now) when I am snorkeling! Found a really cool spot just off the tide pools with the help of a dear friend (hi john Smile )...it's really kinda new to me since only really snorkeled a few times...but after the initial "I can breathe, I can breathe" exercise - I'm HOOKED. Also, it's helping my chubby self to slim down...gettin' brown...losing chub...it's all good Haahaaahaa...

Okay, Dan - it WAS a flounder I saw in the tidepools - also lots of Yellow Tangs, Moorish Idols and some Fire Coral...I found a really cool website where I can watch little clips of fishes...so - gonna head out I think to the point near the Mauna Kea Resort today...supposed to be a real nice snorkel spot!
