Airlines pricing
#1
Can someone explain this to me - I was thinking of going to LA for a week so .....

KOA to SFO (thought maybe it would be cheaper than ITO/LAX. KOA/SFO with a southwest flight SFO-LAX or BUR)

I typed in KOA - SFO and got back this:

KOA to SFO via LAX, then SEAttle, then SFO is $676

so I tried KOA to LAX thinking it must be a fair amount less since it was 1 flight instead of 3 flights.

KOA to LAX direct is $800

(all on United...) Is this screwy or what?

no, it's typical of the airlines to charge you more for the convenience of a direct flight, and discount itineraries that take in more markets. For example, last year it cost me 1/3 the amount to fly KOA-SFO-Sacramento than to be on the exact same plane SFO-KOA. $400 plus to Sacramento RT via SFO, $1300 direct to SFO. And no, you cannot split at your preferred airport, or they cancel your return flight and put you on a "bad" list.

Try Alaska Airlines out of Koa, cheapest I've found to CA

Try Hilo to Sac ca. on Hawaiian. Hawaiian has some good rates now.

Kat, I agree, that is so silly when it is flying to LA in the first place!!!! I have a mainland travel agent that is a good friend and she always seems to be able to get me deals (and seats) that cannot be bought online anywhere.

I bought my son tickets on Alaska Air for under $400 OAK to KOA. It is cheaper flying to Oakland, but then he flew Jet Blue ($35 each way from/to LA. It was still cheaper than KOA to LA.

If you book now, for flights after March 15, Alaska has some great deals to/from Sacramento and San Jose, new airports for their direct flights to KOA. Last time I checked the tickets were going for $150. each way.

A friend of mine is going to LA and SFO in a week and she found great ticket prices on Hawaiian (under $400) but I am not sure what airport she is flying from and of course, that includes the flight to Honolulu to get on a mainland bound plane.

Aloha au i Hawai`i,
devany

HA is running a great $288 special to the west coast - that happens to be HNL/SEA and Portland/Maui. I dont even want to go to Seattle in the summer! haha

Thanks everyone for the info.

(We came up with a better solution - fly into Oakland and do a nice relaxing drive down Hwy 1...)

Are there ever any cheap deals to Las Vegas that could be used as an easy way to get to other parts of the mainland?
