Growing Potatoes in Puna
#1
Anyone been successful growing potatoes up here in the rain? What methods have you used? I am very keen to grow them but am at a loss as to the best way to start. Thanks for your help...

We did them a couple years ago. We put the starts in the ground, made a 2 ft tall wire basket around them and them piled dirt and mulch weekly. The wire basket allows them to drain. The ones under a mini-greenhouse clear roof to keep them from being so wet did best. Good luck!

I tried them last year in a raised bed in the greenhouse. I did not get seed potatoes, which may have been a mistake. They grew for awhile, nothing spectacular, then died off. I may try again with seed potatoes.

Try sweet potatoes, those grow much better than Irish potatoes. Get a sweet at the grocery and put it halfway into some water. Let it sprout and then when the sprouts are about a foot long or so and making leaves, cut them off and plant them. It works best with sweet potatoes and not as well with yams.

After the sweet potato vines grow and then die back, then dig up the sweets.
