I love my TiVo! Its empowering to watch my favorite programs when I decide and not when the TV decides to show them. Our local cable company, Time Warner Cable, only offers DVRs to digital cable customers. I only have SD basic cable and it doesn't work with it, but the TiVo does! So I can keep my $13 a month basic cable and still have the luxury of downloading programs to watch when I'm ready, all for less than $13 a month subscription fee ($129 yearly). The box has dual tuners and records up to 80 hrs. It was on sale on the website last month as a refurbished unit for only $50. Also bought the wireless G adapter to connect it to the Internet but you can also use a phone line.
I checked their website this morning and these deals on equipment are no longer offered but Amazon.com often has them.

tivo is one of those inventions like cell phone, gps (moreso on mainland), and the internet that are nearly indispensible. Plus the nice thing about tivo vs. the time-warner box is, with Tivo, you own the box, with time warner, you only rent the box. And tivo can be used anywhere on cable or even antenna (I think also with some satellite providers)
As a digital high def cable subscriber, I like renting the DVR. All I have to do if it gets snappish is take it in and get a new one, or have a tech bring one to me. Plus they can actually diagnose and fix most problems over the line. They can also update the software over the line, so that the older one has the capabilities they have just come up with. Can they do that with a third party TiVo?
I'm not saying TiVo isn't great if you have basic cable or for dish or for anyone who loves them. Just saying something for the DVR side. I have an HD TV and regular stations look like crap on it, so I rarely watch anything that's not on the hi-def spectrum. It's hard to go back once one has that kind of crystal sharp image, with perfectly clear frame by frame advance (was very useful when LOST was on, lol).

We have DVR also and yes
NO Commercials is the best part! We think we are in the stone ages if we have to watch live TV with the commercials! Plus I can record all the HGTV stuff I like, and watch it when I am pretending to be housewifely. The old guy like being able to watch Guy Hagi do the weather no matter what time he gets home from work.

Sometimes I find myself watching live TV and push the fast forward button, forgetting that it's live. I can't think of anything that's changed the experience of television as much as this device. I love that it's smart enough to find programs that are on at hours that I would never watch TV and records them. Instead of asking what's on tonight, I usually have a buffet menu. I know that it's fashionable to mock TV and those who watch it. There was a time when I wouldn't have one in my house. However, at this point in time, the best writing is going into cable TV shows, whereas movies are dumbing down and catering to the mass audience. Cable shows don't have to please a huge demographic, and as a result, some wow stuff. Mad Men, for example.
But to keep it Puna, I hope I'm not the only one here who gets Hi Def, because it's a wonderful thing.

Only problem watching programs on computer is that closed captions are not normally available for those of us who need the extra support. A site that does provide CC is
www.ted.com, which provides videos of innovative lectures and presentations.
