transferring car insurance
#1
Hello,

Our grand daughter is planning to give us her used car and buy a new one for herself. Can we transfer the insurance from her name to our name or do we have to buy new car insurance?

No. You cannot transfer insurance.

Unless you were listed as co-insured on your grand daughter's policy, I think you will need to purchase your own car insurance. If you already have auto insurance, it is relatively simple to add another vehicle. Consult a licensed insurance professional to be sure about your options. They all give free estimates and can advise you.

We sold off our car two years ago and haven’t carried auto insurance ever since. Guess we’ll need to find a car insurance company then. Any recommendations?

SEARCH function on the forum is handy - and would save you a lot of time waiting for an answer. The above topic should help you.

Thanks @mdd7000; followed the thread you suggested. I’ll look into Geico, The Hartford, Progressive and AARP.

You will need to buy new car insurance. If you belong to AARP, you could try their car insurance, else check with your home insurance company, if they do auto insurance too. Getting both from the same place will save you some money.

For retired people, The Hartford through AARP is a good option.

Stay away from AIG, they have terrible service.

I absolutely love my State Farm agent and office. Cary Ichinose in Hilo. And unlike my previous State Farm agents on the mainland (30 years' worth), Cary sets up an annual face-to-face meeting with you to go over your policies. Our recent meeting ended up saving us like $75 a year. Who knew?
