We have recently purchased a house in HPP and used Kewin Lewis as our agent. He is the most knowledgeble and experienced real estate agent I have ever met. He negotiated a great deal for us, we were very happy with his performance, communication, attitude and everything. Even if you decide not use him, check out his website, there are a lot of tips on buying place on the East side of Hawaii. http://www.hiloagent.com

Limited experience here, but I also used Kevin Lewis when I bought in Fern Acres, and would highly recommend him as well. His website http://www.hiloagent.com has a lot of great information for buyers...go there and study up, being an informed buyer is critical.
Although our budget was low, he still spent time with us and showed us all of the places that we were interested in. I'll admit, we did make it easier on him by driving by all of the properties that interested us FIRST, and then asked him to arrange a showing so we could see the insides. --- Life is the only thing worth living for...

We bought two properties with Kevin and ended up getting a new friend in the bargain. We were pro-active buyers (we pre-screened properties on-line, drove past homes before looking inside with Kevin, etc.) and he was very helpful throughout the endeavor. Some agents like to take total control of the buying process, but we prefer a team approach which was a good complement to Kevin's style.
