Should I ship my RV over here?
#1
Please share your opinions or advice. I have a 22’ RV in California. It would cost almost $5000 to ship it over. Registation would be expensive too, as cost is based on weight. Is it worth it?
I’m thinking I could recoup expenses by renting it out to people who are building houses and want to stay on the building site for security reasons.

Do you know of anyone interested in renting an RV to park on their site? How much do you think people would be willing to pay on a weekly basis? If no electricity is available, the RV has a generator but with the cost of gas it would be expensive to run.

Another concern is where to dump the waste tank. Any suggestions?

That's basically what we're planning to do. In fact we're taking delivery on a 31' Jayco travel trailer next week for just this purpose. The cost of the RV (including shipping) is about what we'd spend on rent while the house is being built; and it has the added benefit of allowing us to occupy the property while the project is under way & keep an eye on things. I figured after the house is finished, we wouldn't be any worse off if financially if we pushed it over a cliff SmileSmileSmile This made the decision to send it over pretty much a no-brainer. A number of people HAVE asked us what we plan to do with it afterwards and if we'd consider selling it, so there definitely is a resale market of some sort. We may do this when the time comes, or we may just keep it for use as guest quarters.

Be aware though, that not all areas and subdivisions allow camping on your property - if I'm not mistaken, Leilani Estates is an example of this. In any event, you are going to have to have a cesspool/septic system for the rig. There is no RV industry in Hawaii and thus no dealers, campgrounds, or dump stations.

As far as registration is concerened, I personally have no plans to annually register ours at all. The only time this bad boy's gonna see a public road is on the haul from the docks in Hilo up the hill to Mountain View.

BTW, are you thinking of using Matson or Pasha if you ship yours?

aloha,
Gene

There is an RV industry in Hawaii (albeit a small one). Check out islandrv.com in Kona. He rents out RVs to people. You might ask him (Clark) how he deals with dumping the waste and so forth.
