We have had a visitor for the last few days, an 'Io (Hawaiian Hawk), and it does not seem to be bothered by our presence. I did not see him until I was under him, less then five feet away in a tree over my head. Someone else saw him the other day and walked close to him as well. Its shriek is SO loud when you are that close to it! We stood there and looked at each other for about 15 minutes, and was not bothered by any of my movements or our conversation.
I was wondering if anyone else had an encounter with an 'Io like this, and if it is normal. It seems like it is at the end of its immature stage.

We have an 'Io flying by our condo every evening and one time he/she flew to our lanai to catch a gecko! He/she was probably five feet away from me!

Yea, they're amazing, about 5 feet away is the closest I've ever been able to get. We live in Eden Roc and they dine on our chickens. They're either oblivious to me or don't think I'm a threat. I screamed at one so loud one day when it was chasing my favorite bunny that a neighbor two streets away came running thinking I was being hurt; it was still running around trying to catch midnight by the time she got to my house.

7 years ago we were renting in lower HPP & every few weeks there was an `Io overhead. One day we noticed it right outsiide our office window at the top of a fairly short hala....and notcied it bobbing down ...we then realized it was sitting right ago a dove nest... one the doves used routinely, but we had never seen in fledglings.... obviously the hawk & doves had an arrangement...

Y'all are so blessed to have an I'o around! They are aumakua to some. In old Hawaii, as I was taught by kupuna, farmers were guided and protected by the I'o or Pua'a.
Magnificent birds!

Do they make off with small house dogs and cats as well? Here in Alaska we have to watch our small house pets or the bald eagles take off with them!
Do you have coyotes on the Big Island?
