Pahala
#1
Quick question,
What does everyone think of Pahala. It's down Kau way, but I thought someone would know a bit about it. See you all in a few days

Beautiful area, some really serene areas, esp up in the "Wood Valley" area
Low chance of Lava inundation (zone 6) because of a severe uplift ridge
Area has the look & feel of summertime rural PA or WI - grassy rolling fields with cows, but with to die for views of the ocean...
Far away from most everything (makes buying things there more pricey, aka. rural Alaska, but much nicer weather)

There is one very severe caveat on that location for some.... right now (ie, the last ~5years), the VOG is really an issue, esp. for those with any type of respiratory conditions, and has had a significant effect of growers (well, that & the fact they are also under the effects of the severe drought this island has had - well, much of this island...)

I used to live just down the road in Discovery Harbour (Naalehu). It's really far from everything; shopping, events, nightlife.
Whenever I made a run into Hilo or Kona, I would have 16 or more stops/errands, just to make the trip worthwhile.

The area has great weather; more rain than Kona, less than Hilo. There weren't any coquis when I was there in 2007-8.

The VOG was a problem; if you have breathing issues, don't consider that area. And my jewelry and tools oxidized very quickly there; items wrapped in plastic were fine, others got kinda crusty.

I like the town and the area. Used to have horses in Oregon and Pahala is beautiful horse country! A friend and I drove down to Punalu'u bakery (to escape the December rain) and we stopped in Pahala and walked several streets.
It was very quiet and the neighbors all seemed friendly, however, they were watching us suspiciously. But the big, big problem is vog. As lovely as the day was, the vog finally caught up with me and we had to head back to the car. Too bad!

One more thing. Friends from my former hometown on the mainland built a new house in Pahala about 7 years ago and they only lasted two years. They moved back to Idaho and their house was on the market for years the last I heard.
