House Insurance
#1
I wonder if fire insurance is higher if you are in volcano zone one vs zonne 2 or 3.
I suppose the insurance would pay off if Pele got close and heated the house to combustion, but not if a landslide just covered it up.

Yes it is higher, but it's not that bad. HPIA writes policies in Lava Zone 1 and 2, $1,200/year for a $250K house. You will have to go to Lloyds of London if the value of the improvements are higher than $250K.

Can you recommend an insurance agent for our kids' house in Volcano, lava zone 3?

Lava Zone 3 is easy and anyone can give you a policy there. I personally used Scott Rost of Allstate for my Lava Zone 3 house in HPP. You can reach him at 322-2187 or ScottRost@allstate.com. Feel free to use my name for reference.

Cary Ichinose at State Farm did great work for us, back in the days when we were in Lava Zone 3 (we're in a LZ 2 now and they don't cover there). He's at 933-8500. We still use him for life and auto insurance.

The map looks like everything south of and including Pahoa is zone 2 or 1. My wife now says she will only feel safe in zone 3, only. I can't understand why people would build expensive homes in the hot pond area, unless they are on wheels, because the odds are in the favor of Kilauea, that they will be covered up. Also they will only be insured up to 250K, I guess they are so rich they can stand the loss.

Hey Lew, remember there isn't a kryptonite wall between zones 1,2 and 3 so make close friends with someone in lava zone 4.....
hahaaa Smile)))) Welcome and Aloha! HADave LZ3

Well, if the lava ever gets to Pahoa then this whole island is screwed regardless of lava zones. Smile BTW, the Lava Zone Map was prepared with the prediction of the top of Mauna Loa blowing but what happens if it's not the top but somewhere on the side? There goes your map!

I live in zone 1 and I knew the risks beforehand, watched Kalapana burn in '90. But I love it here, and so do a whole lot of others- that's the Punatics creed- "We're all here because we're not all there!"Wink PS There are new houses being built on the fresh lava in Kalapana Gardens, they're even crazier than I am.....
