fyi the process didnt go smoothly but it DID eventually get me here. (to where I can post)
multi probs and I still get "Activation key not found in our database" message when clicking on email url. Albeit...Im registered. mahalo.

Don't be surprised if the spammers already have a bunch of accounts "saved up" to use for spam later. You might want to check the list of users and if there are several hundred recent ones with BS names etc they are probably sleeping cell members of the spam army.
I've been the admin of many forums and unfortunately once you are on "their list" it will be a problem that never goes away. One of the things that is effective is challenge questions that only a human being can answer. Of course you do have to change them frequently. Also make sure that when you delete a spam account that you ban the email address associated with it, so the bots have to go through the additional step of setting up another throwaway email account.
