I hope someone out there knows the answer to this question - When I go to the farmers market I notice that the majority of vegetables look the same, they stack all the vegetables in boxes and pack them into small plastic bags before selling them to the customers. Are these vegetables suppose to be grown at THEIR farm or do they buy them from a larger wholesaler that has them shipped in from who knows where? I want to buy organic and other pesticide free products but how can I believe that these are valid vendors? I hope someone knows the answer. Thanks

They buy wholesale and sell retail, same way as everywhere. The woman who ran "Godmother's" got her "Specials" like stuffed pork chops at Costco and drove them to Pahoa once a week, same difference. If you're looking for organic local white potatoes, onions, carrots, forget it. Look more local, like green onion, sweet potato, lau lau, wing bean, etc.

The Saturday Kinoole market (near Kahaopea) says they sell only locally produced items.

Localvore in Pahoa sells only locally grown/made items. Have recently heard they are relocating to a larger space in Hilo.

Johnson's farm is the only one that I would consider ORGANIC. I rarely find vegy's there except leafy items. I wish they had more of a variety. Thank You for that information.

I just talked to Arthur at Localvore and they have already closed the Pahoa location and are preparing their new Bayfront location for a planned Dec. 8 opening. They will be near the Waianuenue end of Bayfront.
