Maybe I missed the announcement, but I did my normal monthly transfer station run today and the HI5 redemption is gone. I don't mean it wasn't staffed, I mean its's GONE. Fortunately, the Atlas place is still there in Pahoa... but what happened?

Atlas was the one that went away. Hawaii Business Services had the prior contract and when Atlas got the new contract, HBS set up shop on Pahoa road every day and all hours (no lunch off, no alternating days) so I think they got more of the business.
Saw a memo or heard it a week or so ago. County was telling people to go to HBS on Pahoa Road.
Speaking of the new transfer station: since they have moved and the gold-plated (lava encrusted) transfer station is now just a multimillion dollar lava viewing site, what do you think of the new recycling system? Raise your bottles over your head to get them into the bin?
I know Billy and Darryl have been real busy but somewhere between Environmental Management, Solid Waste, and ADA Coordination someone(s) seem to be sleeping on the job.
The mixed recycling dumpster is even taller than the glass dumpster, and I was bummed out to see an elderly Asian woman struggling to get her recyclables in the container while the staff person was playing something on his phone in the shelter.
I have heard that the County has some ramps lying around their base yard and was wondering if they could make the new transfer station ADA compliant, because it seems like that would make it better for everyone.

Thanks for bringing up a good point. I had to lift my bags of trash up pretty high to get rid of them and one of them was very heavy and I struggled. I felt very spoiled by the regular transfer stations throwing stuff down the chutes etc. The attendants are worthless, all they do is point you towards an empty dumpster (I can make that determination myself). I'm glad that they rushed to replace the old Pahoa transfer station but you are right that the elderly and others won't be able to use it and the attendants serve no purpose at all.

You left out playing on their cell phones while ignoring the needs of the public. They refuse to even acknowledge most of the people who drive in now, much less help out when glass breaks and they are asked for a broom or something to clean it up. One did say they have lots of the metal ramps to make the recycling accessible in the Hilo yard, but aren't bringing them because this is a "temporary" set up.

Happy Day B4 New Year,
FYI, the County has moved the recycling bins further back on the property and has installed ramps to the glass and mixed recycling dumpsters. there is also a place on the ground to dump scrap metals, and another place to get rid of unloved appliances.
A big mahalo to the County! It's starting to look more like the old transfer station and is much more functional now.
